“This is a delightful spot destined some future day to be the abode of civilised man”….(Giles 1838)
As you drive through this wonderful region the undulating appearance of the country-side, together with the scattered manner in which the trees are dotted about in all directions over the landscape… mainly wind-blown she-oak’ and ‘gum’ trees… you experience the steepness and sparsity of this rich in colour, beautiful, glowing, rolling landscape.
A substantial part of these rolling hills, hills that clearly de ne the valleys around Yankalilla; have been ‘bald’ grasslands since settlement – thus the name Bald Hills appears in the region. However, the many high ridges along Kemmiss Hill Road provide commanding views westward to the valley of the Bungala River and the Gulf St Vincent but also eastward toward the Bald Hills and north toward Carrickalinga and Myponga… overall a sense of openness pervades.
This is always a very spectacular drive – in summer it is stunning.
